Megan Rapinoe on the set of her talk show for HBO, “Seeing America with Megan Rapinoe.” | HBO
USWNT star and outspoken advocate Megan Rapinoe kicks off a new talk show on HBO tonight, talking to AOC among others. If you loved watching Megan Rapinoe on Instagram live with her girlfriend, Sue Bird, HBO hopes you’ll love her even more as the host of her own talk show, starting tonight.
“Seeing America with Megan Rapinoe” debuts on HBO at 10 p.m. EDT and PDT. The world famous soccer star’s inaugural guests are Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York City, Peabody Award-winning comedian and host of Netflix’s “Patriot Act” Hasan Minhaj and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones.
Rapinoe tweeted the news about her new gig Monday:
We have an opportunity to reimagine society and ourselves. Join me in a conversation with @AOC, @nhannahjones and @hasanminhaj to talk about the challenges we face as a nation and how we can move forward together.Seeing America with Megan Rapinoe premieres 8/1 at 10pm on @HBO pic.twitter.com/zrUMPN4z4D— Megan Rapinoe (@mPinoe) July 27, 2020
In a news release, HBO said Rapinoe will discuss “critical issues facing society today” in the first recorded episode.
“It is an honor to host a show with a critical conversation between some of America’s most innovative thought leaders,” Rapinoe said in a statement provided by the cable television conglomerate. “I am so thankful to HBO for providing such a powerful platform for this important dialogue.”
HBO said Rapinoe, who is also listed as one of the show’s executive producers, leads “a spirited dialogue with these change-makers, aiming to help shape the ongoing cultural conversation that has been taking place during this significant time in our country’s history.”
Although HBO notes Rapinoe is an outspoken trailblazer dedicated to activism, the company’s release makes no mention of something that sets her apart from other TV hosts: That she is an out lesbian. Having Rapinoe host this program is a significant, even groundbreaking achievement of visibility for the LGBTQ community and for women athletes in the fight for equality. But HBO didn’t mention that, online or in its press release.
So we did.
Congrats to Megan Rapinoe and kudos to HBO for providing her with his platform.
